The Life of an Apostle!
The below quote is from first corinthians about what it means to live as an apostle and gives food for thought especially for christians today.
1 Corinthians 4:9-13 I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. 10 We
are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are
weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without
honor. 11 To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless; 12 and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; 13 when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.
Today the world is filled with so many preachers and churches / christian denominations focused on the so called "prosperity Gospel". They seem to be too centred on the material world and reaping wealth and property, good health, a fulfilled and happy life e.t.c. While it is not bad to want a happy life , free from sorrow, it is also very nrealistic and not truly christian at all!
Where is the cross? Where is suffering for a purpose? Jesus is quoted as saying "if you will not pick up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy to be my disciple." Those who put the hand on the plough and look back are not worthy to serve me". Basically, if you value "things" and other attachments, (including family, friends, spouses) over God's kingdom then you are not a true follower of christ.
There is no Christ without the cross! The two are inseparable and we need to learn to accept suffering with patience and humility. This message applies especially to the priests who are now living much more comfortable lives than the apostles ever did but also to the lay faithful! How many of us today would endure even half of what the apostles did for the sake of Christ? Ask yourself that question. Lord Jesus, grant us the faith of your chosen apostles. Amen.
