Pieces of the puzzle......
The "ubuntu" philosophy of Africa is a model of life in my opinion. Literally translated to mean "i am because we are", it is a philosophy that embraces the belief that we are all universally connected and dependant on one another as humans! It is a beautiful and true philosophy especially for our times which emphasize selfishness and are centred on materialism and ego!
We have replaced people with things in the hope of fulfilling our lives and in the search for happiness! We have deluded ourselves into thinking we are happy when we are comfortable and have the "securities" that wealth affords! Do we ever stop to think how miserable the wealthy can be? Or how marriages of the rich and famous, seemingly beautiful couples never seem to last?
When we replaced people with things, we moved even further away from the source of true happiness which is love, the love of God and neighbor! I cannot forget the homily Bishop Michael Curry gave at the royal wedding of Meghan and Harry, about the power of love. In summary, he was saying when love is the way, there is nothing we cannot accomplish!
We are all pieces of the great puzzle that is life and the ubuntu philosophy echoes that! No one has nothing to offer, no one is too poor to contribute anything! We all have different gifts and we all have weaknesses. I can be strong in an area where you are weak and vice versa! We often think when we are "successful" (wealthy, powerful) or blessed with gifts like beauty, a special talent, we think we are better than others without such gifts! We feel that maybe they are not us deserving as us!
Lord, help us to remember that we are all created in your dignity and bear the image of your glory! Help us to love one another just as you have loved us and so bring harmony to the earth! Amen.
